There is a need to understand what dividends are, before we discuss the explanation of how they work. A dividend is the sum an investor receives from the company he/she is presently investing in. The company distributes the dividend amount from the net income it generates throughout its financial year. As a result, dividends are likely to be paid to the investor if the company makes a profit.

The dividend is usually paid on a quarter or yearly basis. This means if an investor owns a company’s stock for a year, they will be able to receive two lump sums a year (almost always in the form of cash).

But keep in mind, in order to receive a dividend you must own the stock prior to the ex-dividend date. The dividend payments are made to the investor on the payment date set by each individual company, these dates are provided on a company’s investor relations section of their official website.
